The Joys of a Small Server.

The amount of people I hear moan about how small my servers economy is and how hard it is to make gold is amazing. Personally I love playing the auction house on a tiny server it allows for easier domination and market control. I was listening to the JMTC weekly meeting, sucks that its held at 2AM my time otherwise I would love to join, and they were discussing the elementium/obsidium shuffle. Some people on there believe it is dead and that they cant keep up with the botters, well on my server i'm lucky to find cheap ore and there is very little competition on the gem market.


There certainly is price inflation on some epic quality items and there are dry spots in the market, but a savvy gold maker can use these things to his advantage. The lack of competition means I can price my goods at huge prices and they will still sell. The elementium/obsidium shuffle certainly isn't dead on the other side of the pond! This week I have invested around 60k into Pyrite Ore and I have been buying up raid consumables and big investments, I decided with having large amounts of liquid gold I may as well fully utilize it to make the most gold I can. How are you using your big stocks of gold to make huge profits?

I'm Back!

I'm back and hoping to start posting reasonably frequently with better content, college has been crazy but I have found some time to continue interacting with the gold making community. So what has been making me gold recently?

The Darkmoone Faire went reasonably well and with the time I put into farming the cards I was happy with the result, I ending up grossing around 100k. Card prices did drop compared to my predictions, but there was alot of competition around the server. We ended up shifting a fair few decks over to the alliance side. 

I managed to pick up all of the new JC/Enchanting recipes for around 5k each, I got the Reverberating Shadowspirit recipe for 900g! These so far haven't made me much, just a few 80g fees from barking my proffessions, but in the long run I aim to dominate my servers enchanting and cutting service as people have in the past. I find having every recipe is the only way to do this. 

I have been listening to 'The Auction House Junkies' podcast whilst working. Cold and Wes are great hosts and I'm sure they will keep it up with the brilliant and frequent content. 

I have been buying alot of Pyrite Ore for patch 4.3 where I expect epic gems will launch. Investing in this could be the difference of hundreds of thousands of gold in the first few days of the epic rush. I plan on monopolizing as many cuts as I can and I am hoping to hit my million around the time epic gems release. 

On a personal note I have been raiding alot and my guild has managed to catch up with the most progressed guild on our server. We are 3/13 and hope to get Maloriak Down in the near future. This raiding tier has been one of the favorites I have played throughout, the fights are dynamic and challenging and the experience me and my friends have played through together has been really enjoyable.

4.1, How does it effect us?

So 4.1 is on the test realms so I imagine it will be coming soon, how does this patch effect gold makers and what can you be doing now to make sure you are making the most of the coming patch.

First of all Maelstrom Crystals are going to crash, sell every Crystal you get now and try not to take any into the next patch. This drop is due to the new dungeons, Zul'Aman and Zul'Gurub now these dungeons drop iLevel 353 Epics meaning the supply of epics to the economy is increasing by leaps and bounds. What else do the introduction of these dungeons mean for us? Well they will probably increase enchanting mats, scrolls and gems for a few weeks. So I would advise on stocking up some rubies and enchanting mats ready for the first few days of troll madness!

Now we assumed until a few days ago that 4.1 would bring us The Firelands raid and a new raid tear, this would  come with a complete gear reset. A gear reset is one of your biggest events in an expansion, it gives the savvy auctioneer a huge opportunity to make thousands upon thousands of gold! Unluckily this isn't coming anytime soon, expect it to hit around June/July. This patch may bring epic gems, if your not stocking Pyrite Ore for this then I would advise starting as there is a fairly high chance that this is where our new gems will come from.

On a personal note i'm coming close to the half a mill liquid mark after a few deck sales, I also got Halfus Heroic the other night it is a thrilling fight which was a load of fun to down. Sorry for the inactivity been busy, to be honest I have been slacking :)

Cross Faction Obsidium Arbitrage!

Is your constant Obsidium buying making prices rocket? The demand you and your competitors are making seriously inflates the price for the Jewelcrafting bread and butter. So how do you get it cheap, how do you slash your costs so that you can own the market. Well there is a way you can take that extra step up from your shuffle competitors, you can Arbitrage your ore!

Arbitrage means that you swap items between the two factions on your server for personal benefit, me and a few friends have recently setup a guild bank with ~100k on our alliance side to take advantage of our servers massive faction fluctuation. Getting gold over there is easy, although you have to pay the 15% neutral cut. The other way of getting gold to the other side can be made cheaper by transferring items of worth and then selling them over there. 

As you can see from these two screenshots the prices and supply vary massively, they are both subject to the same conditions just on two different sides of my server. This is basically due to me, I buy up all cheap ore on my side causing prices to sky rocket so I am starting to buy from the other side. Eventually I will drive up the other sides prices but while I can I may aswell grab my money and run!

My factions ore shortage has been cutting into my profits and the input of the alliance ore has boosted my profits by a huge margin and I'm back on my way to make my million. This week I have been farming Whiptail and am up to around 7 decks, I flipped a hog for a few thousand profit and am on close to 600k if I make as expected during the fair.

Whiptail!

Another post on the subject of Whiptail today, I have recently been farming tonnes and tonnes of this herb and you know why? People assume the nerf to the spawn rates where drastic, when infact they weren't and I can farm 50 Stacks of Whiptail in an hour at the right time. I leveled my Druid the other day from 0 -> 525 Hebalism in 4 Hours and you can do it too and its so worth it. My route is showed on this map, its basically looping all the grassy area's.

The reason I am farming herbs is due to the Darkmoon Fair which is coming up next sunday, me and a friend are pooling all of our herbs and resources together to make as much gold as we can in the few weeks of the fair and the few weeks after it. There are very little clued up auctioneers on my server, making domination simple if you know what you are doing. We currently have around 15 Decks ready and are farming more every day, I have invested around 50k of herbs into this venture with the hope I will make a huge margin. Are you doing anything to prepare for the Fair?

On a personal note this week me and my guild got [Glory of the Cataclysm Raider], meaning I am now "Grogar, Defender of a Shattered World" and people are riding around on purple birdies! It was a thrill to down all the normal content and now we will move onto the heroics and have fun doing so.

Working Overtime

The Guild Perk - Working Overtime - gives you a higher chance to gain a skill point when crafting an item with one of your profession but what exactly does that help us with? Well the basic run down on skill chances whilst leveling professions are :-

Orange - 100%
Yellow - 60%
Green - 15%

These figures are in no way precise, the formula for chance of a skill increase it fairly complicated and I refuse to go all Maths on you all as I will become engrossed and rabble for pages.

So the perk makes no change to orange crafts although yellows now have an average of a ~70% chance to grant you a skill point, greens with ~25%. So relatively it increases the chance of greens by the most, and after that yellows of course. So if you plan on leveling completely by oranges , then this perk wont help you. Leveling a blacksmith this week I did see, if small, a increase in my yellow point gains. 

So think about waiting for this before you start leveling new crafting professions it will cut costs and is currently the main gold making perk (personally rather than guild wide).

Back to Transmuting!

So since Volatile Life shot up with patch 4.0.6 I wasn't transmuting my elements but this morning I noticed a guy on trade selling large quantities of Volatile Life. I ended up buying 800 for 7k, so I sent 400 to each of my alchemists and started to transmute life to air. They changed the way that Transmute Masters get a bonus from this cooldown and I got 4 extra Volatile Water twice over. It appears that you will get around 4 of a random element each time you use it as a master.

On another note, earlier this week my guild was running some TBC raids and we eventually got into Tempest Keep. I said on TS that if the mount drops I would buy it for 250k, some of my friends said that this was crazy and they would definitely sell it and others said that they would never sell such a lucrative mount. I think people have different views on how much mounts are worth, I would easily pay a Qtr of a Mill for the phoenix as its by far the rarest and best looking mount in the game. How do you feel on mounts? Would you pay so much for one and if so how high would you go?

On another note I have been seriously ill and didn't feel like writing a post on my iPhone, I didn't get out of bed much so sorry for the lack of content. I couldn't think of anything to write when my head was pushed against my pillow watching trash TV, and whats the point in writing bad posts eh?

Infrastructure!

I'm out today for an interview at the University of Manchester and after my train being cancelled i ended up getting to the University an hour early. I decided to write a blog post during this time, but I couldn't think of anything to write about. I was scouring my mind for anything that makes me gold on a regular basis, it feels like I have spoken about everything.

Then after a while that lightbulb popped up and I decided that I have never spoken about the most important thing in gold making that separates the true auctioneers from the wannabes. INFRASTRUCTURE, setting up your addons and increasing your efficiency is the true talent that any gold maker is striving to master. With the proper setup even one hour of playtime per day could make you thousands upon thousands of gold. 

I have gotten to the point where I am so used to posting and cancelling the only part of my gold making routine that I have to think about is buying up items to change or flip. I am sure that I can personally improve my setup, as perfection is something you can strive for but rarely achieve.

There are a few addons I could not play the auction house if they weren't there to help. Auctioneer, TradeSkillMaster and Postal would have to be the big three, and you can find amazing TSM & Auctioneer guides on Markco's 20k Levelling Guide! Another addon that I have grown to love is BankStack, it organises my bags and bank so that I can easily find any item I need. I would seriously advise giving this a go. 

As for me I broke 400k earlier this week and am rocking forward! Hoping to see the gold cap before I start university :)

Whiptail!

Today's hotfixes brought an oncomming fix to the farm rates of whiptail in Uldum. So what does that mean for the average auctioneer, well the supply of Whiptail is going to drop massively so the price should shoot back up. A guildy of mine got there before me and spent 8k on cheap Whiptail as he was online when the change was announced. I imagine you could double your money if you got there early enough and bought it all up.

Now this also means that the supply of volatile life will drop, so if it's still cheap on your server consider buying it up. Whiptail are also used for flasks, so raiders maybe interested in buying them up to produce consumables. I am hoping to be using my twitter feed to announce hotfixes and incoming changes that could make you a fair bit of money!


Earlier this week I sold the Agility to Bracers recipe for 10k, 900% profit in a flip not to shabby. The Bloodied PvP Plate items have been doing well along with the buckles, although my gem Market domination has slowed down to a walk with a supply drought in ore. I'm even thinking about farming Elementium ore!

Blacksmithing!

Ebonsteel Belt Buckles, Cataclysm's version of the belt enchant is really hot right now and is bringing in a load of capital for me. The mats on y server cost around 200g and I sell the buckles easily for more than double that. 

Dig out that blacksmith toon and get moving. 

Another fantastic mover for Blacksmiths at the moment is a Pyrium Weapon Chain, these babies are used by most Melee classes and hunters on there pvp weapons. They cost one mere Pyrium bar to craft and I can sell them for 150g and upwards, making ~500% profit margin for me.

Blacksmithing has been a market I have never really been to dominant in, but this week after trying out these two items I have been inspired to dive further and further into the Blacksmith Market. 

The Pyrium PvP sets I plan on trying out later this week, the demand will have died down after the surge of new 85's but I imagine they will still sell decently.

4.0.6 Enchanting & Jewelcrafting Recipe's

With the recent patch a few recipes became available from any Cataclysm monster. There are 3 Enchanting Recipe's and 3 Jewelcrafting Recipe's :


Formula - Enchant Bracer - Mighty Intellect
Formula - Enchant Bracer - Major Strength
Formula - Enchant Bracer - Agility


Design : Agile Shadowspirit Diamond
Design : Burning Shadowspirit Diamond
Design : Reverberating Shadowspirit Diamond


These are hot enchants at the moment as they are massively superior to any existing enchants for most classes and specs. I have farmed for around 5 hours without seeing one drop so I think the drop rate is pretty low, or i'm crazy unlucky :) Although the other day I sniped the Agility recipe for 1k on the Auction House, I instantly bought it and am now trying to sell it for 15k. If i can't find a buyer for somewhere around that price then I will use the recipe and try and churn out some scrolls.


I plan on farming a few more times trying to get another lucrative pattern, has anyone else seen one of these drop? And if so, what have you done with them. I imagine if you can lock down the market grabbing most of the recipe's that pop onto the AH you could monopolise the market for a few weeks before they come mainstream. Although if that is profitable is another question.


Sorry about not posting yesterday, got caught up in having a social life! I have a week off college now so I should be able to write for the next few weeks and get things back on track and head towards the sky. I hope you all have had great success with 4.0.6. In the past week I have been selling Volatile Air's for 50g/Each (I had 500 stacked up from my Alchemists), Volatile Life for 15g/Each and as usual alot of uncommon gems!

Using the Mobile Auction House - Part 2/2 - Selling

Selling on the mobile auction house is a vital part of your usage of this application. Keeping your Nightstones selling throughout the working day or keeping you stack of Volatile Air up. Again anything you post will take up your 200 Transactions so don't throw them away lightly.

The mobile Auction House is a god send when it comes to keeping 'huge demand' items up, JC Daily gems ect. If you can use your transactions on items that will sell quick. These are the markets you should focus on whilst on the move as I detailed in yesterday's post.

Now when you are actually posting the item I would advise checking price per item and making sure it's checked, I have a few times before posted stacks at the price of a single item. Posting multiple sized stacks to match demand is done easily with this method.

You can scroll through all the items in your inventory, bank and mail. So leaving items in your mailbox from alts ect is a good idea if your going to be away from your character a you can manage it easily on the mobile AH.

You can also go to a list of ended auctions so you can re-post easily and free up your mailbox. Now you can only access the 50 most recent mail items, so if you purchase 50 stacks of obsidium ore you won't be able to access any of the mail you received before that.

Using the Mobile Auction House - Part 1/2 - Buying

Part one of a two part series is coming to you and its all about the Mobile Auction House! I have a fair bit of experience with the mobile version of our domain and I feel like its something i could educate people on. This section will be about buying things on the mobile auction house, finding those steals during maths or snatching some Obsidium Ore on the train!

There are certain things you should know about the mobile auction house to start, you only get 200 Transactions per day so you have to use them wisely. There are many ways to do this and my advise would be:


- Only post things that will sell, dont post items that take a few days to sell leave them for when you get home,
- Don't post items that you will be undercut on in seconds, this is a waste of transactions,
- Finally don't post a tonne of small stack items, posting 10 single stack Hypnotic Dusts uses 10 transactions.


Now onto buying, I find that the application is perfect for snatching Obsidium/Elementium ore as you can search for it precisely and can buy alot of it with your 200 transactions. At the moment I dont use it for flipping big price items, like epics, because my knowledge of prices isnt completely trustworthy.


When searching for items, you should make your search precise. The Mobile AH can only load 8 pages of items at a time so if your search isnt precise you could not find that item your looking to buy! You can limit by Type of Item and Rarity as you can with the in-game AH although you will have to get used to not having Auctioneer and TSM!


I would advise searching by "Buyout Price Per Item" as it clearly shows you the cheapest stack per item, and sorts the ones you may want to buy to the start!

Opportunity Cost and Truegold!

With truegold on my server being down to 565 gold I thought I would do some of the math behind the production of these bars.

So the Transmute costs:

3x Pyrium Bar - 150g
10x Air - 200g
10x Fire - 150g
10x Water - 130g

So that is 630g Flat Rate, so people are currently selling at a 65g loss (without procs). Now with elements costing around 105g to do, and your result being worth 300g (again without procs). Then by doing the truegold you are loosing 260g!
 

For those of you that don't understand opportunity cost, it is the benefit lost when making a decision. so if you 'decide' to make a bar of truegold you are loosing the profit you could make by transmuting your elements.

This is one of the most simple economic principles and will help you understand how choices work. Most people think making truegold won't make loose them money but they dont understand the opportunity lost, the elements profit and selling the mats for truegold.

How can I make money from Archeology?

With recent changes to archaeology it has became a plausible money maker. With common artifacts averaging around 20g after 4.0.6 I have been stockpiling all my commons in the bank ready to sell. I have about 2k banked for when the path hits and I would advise you all to not vendor any commons until Wednesday. 

The obvious way to make gold from digging up stuff is the chance that you will get the Vial of the Sands recipe in a lucritive Canopic Jar. With this your alchemist can create Cataclysms new gold sink, with the mats costing around 40k you can easily charge 4-5k for crafting this. So keep surveying Kalimdor for the Tol'Vir sites and hope you get lucky.  

You can also sell the uncommon fragment boosts (Highbourne Scroll, Tol'Vir Hieroglyphic) on the auction house. Prices will drop fairly rapidly over the expansion so get shifting them while people are Dig Crazy!

Superbowl Weekend Hitting the EU

Over the past few days my servers AH has been dead, I have been undercut around 3 times and I have only sold a handful of gems. The fellow auctioneers in my guild and I have been confused about what could be causing it.


The superbowl over in the states I imagine there is very little economic movement but from my experiences there isn't much of a following in Britain. So what could be causing it? That wasn't rhetorical I have no idea.


On other news I hit the 350k mark this morning, hoping for the Half Mill mark by my 18th. And I am hoping to have Sinestra down by then too :) Sorry about not getting a Video out this weekend fraps wouldn't behave and I had a load of college work to do. Should get it working this weekend as I have a week off to work on the blog and my gold pile.

Army of Alchemists

With most people in the gold game having a small army of Alchemists what are you using them for now adays? At the start of the expansion truegold was making huge profits due to high demand from raiding guilds and low supply as most where questing through Hyjal. 

Although now adays truegold prices have crashed, atleast on my server, due to every alchemist mass producing these. This 'supply push' reduced prices as there just wasn't 

enough demand to keep up.

I would like to direct you to [Alchemy : Transmute Living Elements], this is what I use my Alchemists for at the moment. You need 15 Volatile Life per Alchemist per day. The way this transmute works is that it takes your Life and changes then into another Volatile 

dependent on where you are.

Here is the list of zones and there appropriate elements :

Uldum - Air 

Hyjal - Fire 

Vash'jir - Water 

Deepholm - Earth 

At the moment I have both my Alchemists camped at the Ramhakhen mailbox and pump out ~30 Volatile Air per day. I mainly use these Airs for my [Scroll of Enchant Weapon - Hurricane] which brings me a pretty nice profit compared to selling my Airs raw, it also helps me shift my shards from heroics and other means.

Now dependent on your server and what markets you focus on could depend where you transmute. I would advise airs generally although if your crafting an epic item then you have the versatility to swap to whatever Volatiles you need.

I can see Alchemists being huge when the Cataclysm epic gems come, which I assume will be with 4.2, so if you want to start prepping for a huge week Alchemists and Jewelcrafters will be a necessity to own the market.

BoE 101

Hey guys today I will bring you a rather long post on the trash epics that drop from the current raid content. I will be focusing on the ones that either I have experience with or the ones that you could make gold with. 

As we all know epics at this stage are treasured as people want to get into the raiding scene as soon as they can. And due to this demand people may be willing to pay top dollar! Maybe you even want to spend your hard earned cash on your character. If so this post may help you :) 

[Unheeded Warning] 

This trinket drops from the Bastion of Twilight, it is usable by Rogues, Enhance Shamans and Feral Kitties. As always trinkets are a huge part of your gear so you would expect that his would sell for a large price although at the moment it is quiet the opposite.

Most heroic trinkets are better than this piece as Melee Swings is a low component of most of these classes Damage (minus combat rogues). Also the general proc is pretty poor, my guild have been able to sell two of these for around 15k a piece as neither our rogue or kitty wanted it. 

I have heard rumours of a buff coming to it, which would make it more lucrative but until I find proof of this I will be selling any that we find. 

[Soul Blade] 

This sword, also from the Bastion of Twilight, is pretty sweet for a Frost DK, Protadin, Prot Warrior and possibly a Single Minded Fury Warrior even though no one seems to be playing that. From what I have heard for a tank it is the second best "normal" weapon available so if you need one of these you won't be replacing it until pretty much heroic modes. 

Now this weapon sells pretty well, personally we have used the blades we have gotten for our tanks but due to this I imagine they go for a load on the free Market. If you see one if these cheap on you Auction House then I would give flipping a go, especially if you play on a large raiding server. 

[Chelley's Staff of Dark Mending] 

Now thus staff will sell well, very well. The supply on my server is basically zero because most raiding guilds will be using this to gear there members. If you come along one you could be sitting on 20k+ to the right raiding guild. 

[Dragonwreck Throwing Axe] 

This is the big one, it also drops in Bastion of Twilight. Currently it is the only thrown epic in the game so rogues are desperate for these as they are currently best In slot. I bought our rogue one of these this week for 20k as I saw that as a complete bargain. If you are a rogue get pick pocketing, otherwise look out for one on your Auction House as some raiding rogues could pay a small fortune for there BiS ranged slot. 

[Maimgor's Bite] 

This axe drops in Black Wing Descent, which houses hardly any trash, and is a superb item for any enhancement shaman gearing for raids. I have experienced one of these which I sold to another raiding guild, it fetched a Soulblade and 4k which I felt was a fantastic deal seem as our tank needed the blade. 

If you see one of these on you AH and know an enhancement shaman who needs one for his raiding there is money to be made.

The Obsidium/Elementium Shuffle!

Hey guys,


My Gem and Enchanting business is booming at the moment but I find myself with lashings of left over stock that I need a creative way of shifting. Hessonites, Alicites and Zephyrites rarely sell on my server and due to the amount of prospecting I do they just keep piling up. Nightstones usually fly of the shelves when there is the appropriate daily, during the Zephyrite daily is the only time that I manage to shift some of the blue gems. My question is what inventive ways have you got of shifting your excess stock? 


I will probably disenchant my Hessonites and Alicites one weekend but as you can see my Hypnotic dusts are building up too. The ways I currently sell the dust is raw in stacks of 1, 4 and 20 and as Earthen Vitality Scrolls. Have you guys found any other ways to shift your left over dust? Are there any other cheap enchants that require them and sell at a reasonable mark up? If so share them here!

I am getting close to 1650 Valor points on my warrior and I was wondering what your experiences were with the Valor Boots? I am contemplating selling a set instead of using them to start collecting my tier, how much have you guys got from these treasured 359's?


More of a point of discussion rather than a tip today, hoping for some help on these points too :)

Information Failure and Vendor Items.

Hey guys,

Coming at you with my second blog post. A friend of mine pointed out to me that he was selling a certain vendor item for a huge markup. I was at first puzzled as to what it could be, a new vendor item that I hadn't heard of?  

This item was our lovable [Enchanting Vellum], some of you may not know that this came to orgrimmars Enchanting vendor for 8s a piece! 

I have been selling them in huge quantities for around 4g a piece, I can only put it down to information failure. People must not know that they are avaiable. Make a TSM group and your away, perfect for low levels with small pockets! Generally all vendor items only sell due to information failure, when the consumer does not know the full availability of the product (That they are sold for cheaper somewhere else). Information is usually a god send for the Auction House Addict!

I plan on making a video this week for the YouTube channel which I am hoping to be a large part of this blog! Inclined to make a visual representation of the Obsidium/Elementium shuffle that is currently my main market.

Introduction!

Hey guys, 

I'm starting this blog to hopefully feed peoples endless demand for auction house content. The current big blogs (JMTC, ColdsGoldFactory & CappedByCata) have greatly inspired me and if I could ever produce content half as good as these guys I would be thrilled.

I guess I will introduce myself, I'm Grogar and I play a goblin hunter on Scarshield Legion - EU. I have been playing my servers auction house for a few years, under the guidance of Markco and multiple other bloggers. I lead my own casual ten man raiding guild that has been around for a year or so. I am predominantly a raid leader and guild leader, gold making is the side of me where I play for completely selfish means (involving helping my guild if needed) and loose all friendship ties. I play the gem market ruthlessly and try my hardest to dominate it. 

My plans for this blog is to bring regular content that helps people and adds to the auction house community that I have grown to love. I plan to produce video guides on YouTube and small helpful tweeds. 

I will start today with a short but sweet tip I have found this week, a lot of people have been completely discounting the glyph market and so had I until a few days ago. There is such little supply you can sell a large amount of glyphs for hundreds of gold, I had a lot of glyphs left over after Wotlk and decided to try and shift my stock. After that nights raid I logged my scribe and collected 5k gold from glyph sales. ~80% of my sales where at my TSM fallback, due to no competition. So dig out those glyphs and your scribe could be a huge tool along with fortune cards :)
